cake baking

Come in! Well, well, well. Look who's here. I haven't seen you in many a year.

If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake, baked a cake, baked a cake

If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
Howdya do, howdya do, howdya do?

Had you dropped me a letter, I'd a-hired a band, grandest band in the land

Had you dropped me a letter, I'd a-hired a band And spread the welcome mat for you

Oh, I don't know where you came from 'cause I don't know where you've been

But it really doesn't matter Grab a chair and fill your platter And dig, dig, dig right in

If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake, hired a band, goodness sake!
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake Howdya do, howdya do, howdya do?

Do I want to bake cakes all day every day? NO WAY! Am I having fun experimenting with some different cakes, fillings and frostings? ABSOLUTELY! Would I take a cake decorating class? SURE.

Today is rainy cloudy drizzly - a cake baking day.

random

ran·dom (rān'dəm) Pronunciation Key adj.
Having no specific pattern, purpose, or objective: random movements. See Synonyms at chance.
Mathematics & Statistics Of or relating to a type of circumstance or event that is described by a probability distribution.
Of or relating to an event in which all outcomes are equally likely, as in the testing of a blood sample for the presence of a substance.

random - seems a good description for me. I am rather random. I know my conversations are extremely random - I can NEVER start one conversation topic and follow it completely all the way through. My brain just doesn't work like that. The conversation will always trigger another thought and there I go - I am lost.... new topic - new conversation.... I am sure I drive my friends crazy...although there are one or two friends that can actually follow my train of thought... scary!

So random things I would like to post today:

I like dark chocolate and red wine... and yes, I like them together!
Did you know that Bobby Orr is some famous hockey player that has his own brand of skates?
My niece has a dance recital so we can't go to Disney when we planned... I am working on Plan B.
The spouse is refinancing our house.... do we really need to do this?
My nephew should receive the cardboard house I sent him tomorrow - is my sister going to kill me?
I always pick out the one plate at Tuesday Morning that costs $98. Come on - I thought this was supposed to be a bargain place.
I can think of 7 thrift shops that aren't too far away.
The TJ Maxx at Legends is the best of all.
Another cheer competition this weekend.... whooo hooo.... I can hardly contain myself.
Julie and I are going to become photographers extraordinaire!

Okay - enough for today... I am sure I can be random again another time.

travel

Okay - traveling is "my thing". I absolutely LOVE to travel and especially now that the kiddos are old enough to schlep their own bags... and if I am not actually traveling... I am planning trips. Sometimes they actually come into fruition, but some of the time, they are just "virtual travels" on the internet.

I use SideStep, Southwest, FunJet, or Apple Vacations and just start traveling. Almost always it involves a beach. Ideally, it has cabana boys that bring me fruity beverages...right now, I am in the midst of planning two different vacations. The first is for the beginning of June... it would be the kiddos, me and possibly my niece. My niece has never left the state of Minnesota... so I am debating between the dreaded Disney, San Antonio or my latest idea - San Diego. The second trip would be over Thanksgiving... we had such a wonderful time in Jamaica before Christmas that we want to go somewhere tropical... I love the planning stage.... I research the weather, the hotels... (all inclusive in this case), what are the people like? What about the food? What can we do while we are there? So much to learn and discover....

Who wouldn't want to travel... just imagine - if I could find a place that I could lay on the beach in a hammock and get a hot stone massage while pina coladas are being brought to me just as soon as my glass gets empty.... I am ready to get on a plane now!

The Pile

You have one.... the pile.... ours is on the kitchen counter to the left of the refridgerator. You can find anything and everything in the pile. P-man's yearbook order, Ginger's prescription we never filled, coupons I am going to use, bills to be paid, receipts I know I should keep, the Mary Kay catalog, the bill from getting our side of beef.... it's all there. Well, today I went through it. The pile is down to about 6 items... the receipt to getting the beef butchered (can I return it if I don't want it?) the Mary Kay catalog (I can get make up similar to my Bare Escentuals for about $6 cheaper), Ginger's physical therapy order and a few receipts that I really do need to keep.

It took me over 2 hours. Okay - so I was also instant messaging my niece at the same time on facebook... but still - is it a sign that I let too much accumulate? Probably. But at the same time, I have a good sense of accomplishment today! The trash bag is a little fuller, the pile is shorter, and I am more organized!

Life is good.

naked day

I am thinking about instituting a "naked day". This of course would probably be more successful in the summer than the winter here in Kansas. Naked Day would fall the day after ALL the laundry is done. For a Mom there can not be anything more frustrating than getting all of the laundry clean and then having the family come home and decide they all need to change clothes 16 times. And of course, they never hang back up anything.... it all just gets thrown in the laundry basket.

On the day of hearts - I am having the laundry woes...

facebook

Okay - so I have finally joined the other gazillion people and now have a facebook page. The first week/10 days have been fun. Found an old friend from when I was young... caught up with some girls from high school... the usual stuff. Now. I am starting to feel voyeuristic. I look at their pictures. Read their profiles and their walls.... It is a way of snooping.... I feel so nosey. Then there is that logical part of me that says " don't put it out there if you don't want it read ". Do I care if random people look at my pictures?? Is there a secret part of us that wants the whole world to see us and see what is going on in our lives? Do we disguise it all as a means of communication? A way to keep up on each other's lives? Why don't we just pick up the phone and call them and see what is going on? Or better yet, how about a letter in the mail??

Is my age showing?

A Union for Moms?

I am thinking that we "moms" could start a union.... if you have a union then you can strike, right? I realize that I won't get any higher wages... but the benefits could improve. A "thank you" once in a while would be great. Is "I love you Mom" really too much to ask for? If nothing else, at least I would have comraderie amongst the moms?

There's that old e-mail joke about how a Dad comes home from work and finds the kids riding toys strewn across the front yard, can barely pull because bicycles have been left in the middle of the driveway... walks in the front door and toys, clothes, and trash is on the floor... he looks for his wife.... walks into the kitchen - food and mess all over the place...peanut butter and jelly left out on the counters... sticky finger prints on the refridgerator.... he starts to panic runs up stairs tripping over the toys on the way... rushes to his bedroom and finds his wife laying there reading a book.... asks her "Are you okay?" "What happened?", her reply:

"You know how everyday you ask me what I did all day? Well, I didn't do it today..."

That describes my life... although my kids are older and the messes are a little different... that pretty much is it....
